Off the beaten track luxury Kenya safari
This itinerary has been chosen for people who are happy to go that little bit further to find places that have an amazing sense of adventure about them. The owners of each of these properties have created places that feel exciting, original and authentic and chosen sites that are both breathtaking and remote. A huge variety of experiences are at your disposal from camel safaris, fly camping, creek fishing and sand yachting to bush walks and cultural visits.

The lodges are small assuring a sense of privacy and exclusivity in which to enjoy the varied and abundant wildlife. We have lived in Kenya and only list properties we have been to so feel well placed to recommend this itinerary.

Day-by-day itinerary

Days 1-3: On arrival at Nairobi you will be greeted by a representative who will take you through everything you need to know about the logistics of your trip. (Should you have any problems on your trip they will also be on hand to resolve them.) You will then be transferred by car to Wilson Airport where you will catch a SafariLink flight to Nanyuki and then change onto a private charter flight direct to Tassia airstrip. The whole journey will probably take you about two to three hours depending on connection times. The final flight will give you are very good idea about how remote and exciting a lodge Tassia is. It is set right up on an escarpment so offers fantastic views of this beautiful landscape and is built in a way that means it’s in keeping with its natural surroundings. It’s simple but comfortable and very imaginative in a positive way. This is a very good place to go on game walks because of the diverse landscape and remoteness of the place.
Day 4: On your third morning you will catch another private charter to take you directly from Tassia airstrip to Loisabas (about 20 minutes away) where you will be collected and taken to Kiboko Starbeds. This is a step even closer to your surrounding environment. It is a dramatically designed, handcrafted, wooden raised platform with a partially covered thatched roof and an area for eating and relaxing. From the two ‘bedrooms’ your bed can be rolled out so you sleep under the stars at night. A team of traditional Samburu warriors will host you making the whole experience feel even more unique, exciting and traditional.
Days 5-6: The following day you will be collected and taken to Ol Malo. This is a big step up in terms of luxury compared to the previous few nights and yet still offers outstanding views and a very authentic experience. While staying here you get a real sense of what it must be like to live here. This is the Francombe’s home and they have an amazing capacity to make you feel like you’re sharing it while also leaving you to have your own independent experience. Talk to them about how you’d like to fill your day because the choices are extensive.
Days 7-9: The next leg of the journey is quite hard work but makes reaching your destination all the more rewarding. There are two flights, one from Loisaba to Wilson (about an hour) and then one from Wilson to Malindi (about 90 minutes). At Malindi a Delta Dunes vehicle will collect you and take you to the river estuary (about 2 hours away). This is quite an interesting drive in terms of being able to see a bit of the day-to-day life of Kenya outside parks and is also very picturesque in places. Your journey concludes with a 20-minute boat trip to the lodge. So as you’ve probably guessed this is a remote hideaway. It’s an exciting place to come because it’s so different. It’s not about palm fringed beaches and snorkelling but dunes, estuaries, wetlands and mile after mile of beach without another tourist on it. The accommodation is rustic but very comfortable and nicely finished. There are lots of different things to do here including boat safaris, creek fishing, kayaking, sand yachting and boogie boarding. Otherwise just laze around the pool or in a hammock and watch the days drift by.
Day 10: The journey back to Nairobi is the same as to get here except on arrival at Wilson you will be collected and driven to Jomo Kenyatta Airport for your flight home.

Tailor made holiday
This trip can be tailormade to create a unique holiday for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. It is a more luxurious trip that will suit those who enjoy immersing themselves in new cultures and environments before relaxing in comfort in some of the best and most characterful local accommodation! Quality and value are the hallmark of these trips.

How this holiday makes a difference

We share the view that some tourism in Kenya is essential for the survival of the areas our clients visit. It provides much needed income to sustain communities and wildlife habitats. It is imperative however that it is channeled to safaris and properties that make a genuine difference. In our view this is hard to define so we personally visit every property on our itineraries and complete a Sustainable Questionnaire and only those that reach our minimum standard get representation. As a result you can be assured the safaris we sell and lodges we list are at the forefront of Sustainable Tourism.

Community:
From a community perspective and in varying degrees (please ask to see results for specific lodges) each: employs locally throughout the operation from senior management and guides through to front of house, drivers, cooks and housekeeping; operates a Trust that benefits the local community; charges a conservation fee which goes to the trust; tries to preserve local cultures; supports the development of education within the community; supports the development of health within the community and helps and assists the local community to implement sustainable ways to manage their land and their resources.

Environment:
From an environmental perspective and in varying degrees each lodge is; active in the preservation of the local wilderness; has not purchased land from a community and/or instigated the subdivision of land previously owned by a community; is active in the preservation of wildlife; is active in encouraging the local population to become involved in the conservation of wildlife through self-interest schemes; has measured its Environmental footprint for water usage, crops rain water and recycles its water; has measured its Environmental footprint for waste and has sought to reduce it; ensures solid waste and sewage is disposed of in a way that doesn’t damage the environment; has measured its Environmental footprint for electricity usage and has sought to reduce it; uses renewable energy to cook its food, heat its water and produce its electricity; used sustainable and traditional building materials wherever possible and ensured the construction of the property had a minimal impact on the natural surroundings and is in keeping with the local environment.

Below are some specific details about the lodges on this itinerary:

Tassia Lodge - built for the Mokogodo Maasai, allowing a symbiotic relationship with community and conservation. It is built entirely from low impact local materials. The entire lodge is run on solar power.

Kiboko Star Beds - Since 2000, the Loisaba Community Trust has championed enterprise by helping to set-up the community-owned Starbeds tourism facility, women’s craft-making and a cultural manyatta. It has also sponsored many similar projects as well as livestock husbandry courses. They aim to assist the area surrounding Loisaba by encouraging community-driven enterprises and fostering the development of philanthropic based community initiatives. Loisaba has provided the labour, skills and equipment necessary for the Starbeds. The local people did their part with a sizable community contribution including the plot of regenerated land around the Starbeds which they have decreed a reserved area off limits to stock grazing. The importance of a project such as this is multi-dimensional. Foremost, amongst the objectives is community development. The project has the potential to entrench a new means of earning, helping progress in such areas as Health Care and Education. At the same time its values will help to sustain traditions of the Laikipia Maasai. Meshed with this idea of alternative earning is the second important goal: Wildlife Conservations. Their aim is to work along side the local community and wildlife to preserve the environment in which they all live.

Ol Malo - Has established a reputation for eco-tourism that far exceeds its modest size. It is a world leader. It has set up the Ol Malo Trust, which provides funding and help for the Samburu with their medical needs, education and food. An outlet is also provided to help them sell their arts and crafts.

Delta Dunes Lodge - A conservation fee is paid to the Community for every guest that stays at the Lodge to improve the standard of living, education, employment and medical facilities in the area.
