Mount Kenya walking holiday, Kenya

This holiday is for guests who would like to experience high altitude walking in Africa without the pressure of a summit challenge and with some creature comforts to return to in the evenings - hot showers, delicious dinners and log fires. Slightly off the beaten track on the eastern side of Mount Kenya, this is a walking trip which takes in spectacular waterfalls and also a mini peak, if you feel like a challenge.

We only take small groups, up to four ideally, to minimise the impact on the environment and to make your trip more personal and enjoyable. After your walking trip you can relax at one of the stunning, eco friendly lodges or tented camps nearby. We recommend small lodges with an intimate feel, which also support community projects. The lodges are located in the dramatic, unspoilt wilderness of Laikipia, home to some of Africa’s most endangered animal species and remote from mass tourism.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from airport to hotel in Naro Moru in private vehicle. Afternoon spent relaxing and acclimatising.
Day 2: Transfer from Naro Moru to Chogoria town and then on to your mountain base. Acclimatisation walk after lunch.
Day 3: Walk to Nithi falls for picnic lunch.
Day 4: Walk to Lake Ellis for picnic lunch followed by possible ascent of Mugi Hill.
Day 5: Walk down forest track to meet vehicle and transfer back to Chogoria and then on to your hotel in Naro Moru.
Day 6: Transfer to your lodge. All lodges offer game drives and some offer walking and camel safaris, horse riding, bush breakfasts and sundowners.
Day 7: Staying at lodge.
Day 8: Staying at lodge.

Day 10: Transfer from your hotel to airport for departure back Home.

How this holiday makes a difference

Community
Your trip will be directly supporting our local mountain team of guide, cook and porters, and by extension their families. Our cook buys all your fresh food from local markets in nanyuki and from locally owned, small supermarkets. If you visit a local school and/or shamba (small holding), a contribution will be made to the head teacher or owner on your behalf. The lodges in Laikipia employ local people and some lodges are managed and/or hosted by local maasai communities. All lodges we recommend support community projects. We organise temporary membership of amref flying doctors to give you added reassurance and to support the charitable work of the flying doctor service. Your membership is in addition to, but not instead of travel insurance.

Our Guide, a local Kikuyu, can arrange a visit to his old primary school and his family’s shamba (small holding) in Mukima, near Nanyuki. He can also arrange a visit to a wonderful shamba on the fertile slopes of Mount Kenya where the owner keeps his cows and grows a range of crops from coffee to mangoes, sugar cane and bananas.

All members of our mountain team are paid well, including an amount for a nominal tip. This pay arrangement is agreed with the team and they will not expect any gratuities. Their aim is simply to give you the best possible service. We suggest you extend your stay by spending some time at one of the lodges near Mount Kenya. The lodges we recommend directly support local communities or community based projects. Additionally, your conservation fees will contribute to saving some of Africa’s most endangered animal species, many of which you may see during your stay.

We hope you will gain a real insight into the lives and culture of the people you meet and share with them the spectacular and precious environment of northern Kenya upon which they rely, and which you will be helping to preserve for the future.

Environment
Your Mount Kenya park fees support the work of the Kenya wildlife service in preserving the pristine wilderness of the mountain and the surrounding national park. Your lodge conservation fees support the work of the Laikipia wildlife forum, in partnership with local communities, to conserve some of Africa’s most endangered species. On Mount Kenya, your team will collect any rubbish, dropped by others, and if you are camping on the mountain, our guide will also brief you on the principles of ‘leave no trace’.
