The lodges are located in the dramatic, unspoilt wilderness of Laikipia, home to some of Africa’s most endangered animal species and remote from mass tourism.

How this holiday makes a difference
Our dedicated team, who will be leading and supporting you on your trek, take pride in their team spirit. Together, we discuss every aspect of our mountain trips, from camp and tent preparation to recipes and menus, and we encourage feedback and input from our core group of guides and cook. We have all walked together every step of the mountain trails, and stayed at every camp site, on and off the beaten track. Your safety and enjoyment are our primary concerns, and we hope you will have a memorable mountain experience with our friendly crew who look forward to getting to know you and exchanging views.
Community
Your trip will be supporting our locally based mountain team and their families. We make all our financial arrangements directly with our Guide, so we can guarantee our team is paid in full on the day, or day after, your trip ends.
Our Cook is very skilled at producing delicious meals, even in the most remote locations. All the fresh food for our trips is bought from Nanyuki’s market and other supplies from the locally owned supermarket, and the Cook aims to support the local shopkeepers first and foremost.
The lodges in Laikipia employ local people and some lodges are managed and/or hosted by local Maasai communities. All lodges that we recommend support community projects.
We organise temporary membership of AMREF flying doctors to give you added reassurance and to support the charitable work of the flying doctor service. Your membership is in addition to, but not instead of travel insurance.
After your mountain trip, our guide, a Kikuyu, can set up a visit to his family’s house and smallholding (known as a shamba) which gives you a real inside track experience of local life. He can also arrange a visit to the local primary school, and organise a donation of some school supplies on your behalf.
Environment
Our guide will give you plenty of tips on high altitude trekking techniques and chat to you about the mountain’s flora, fauna and the history of its exploration. The team understand the importance of preserving the mountain environment for the future and they are well versed in ‘leave no trace’ principles, collecting any litter left on the trails by others, as well as removing their own kitchen waste.
Your Mount Kenya park fees support the work of the Kenya Wildlife Service in preserving the pristine wilderness of the mountain and the surrounding national park. Your lodge conservation fees support the work of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum, in partnership with local communities, to conserve some of Africa’s most endangered species.
