Malindi beach accommodation in Kenya

A short tuk-tuk ride from the ancient Arab settlement of Malindi lies the stunning Silversands beach on which sits one of Kenya’s most recognised beach escapes.

For over thirty years the accommodation has been offering owner managed hospitality that has evolved as gently as the coastal way of life. Today this small hotel offers a range of accommodation from single cottages through to private villas, all within a few minutes walk of the private beach and one of the most stunning stretches of African coast.

The hotel looks out over this white sandy beach and the Indian Ocean. There is a good sized swimming pool and a private beach for those that want to soak up the sun within reach of the bar or a light snack. The owner/managers offer home hospitality along with well priced and creative food, all of which is fresh from the ocean and local markets that day. Their reputation for quality and value is growing all the time and the hotel is one of many excellent places to eat in this quirky settlement of Kenya’s north coast.

Set in lush tropical gardens each individual thatched cottage offers a private veranda, generous en-suite facilities and a spacious bedroom with air conditioning. All cottages are within 2 minutes walk of the beach and open communal areas of this lovely hotel. Set behind the individual cottages within their own private compound, shaded by palm trees, are two directors’ cottages which each have two en-suite bedrooms and share a pool. Each cottage has its own veranda and bar area for families to enjoy their own space within this peaceful setting.

Three villas, sharing a pool, lie in a separate walled tropical garden, just 2 minutes walk from the beach. Each villa has two large air-conditioned, en-suite bedrooms with ample mosquito nets. They are also equipped with ceiling fans for those who prefer not to use air-conditioning. They have light and airy, spacious sitting rooms and a small kitchenette.

For those that want to take a few hours break from the beach, the deep sea fishing is amongst the best in the world. If culture is what you seek, reaching the heart of Malindi town with its markets and historic atmosphere is easily arranged. The ruins of the ancient town of Gedi are nearby and the stunning Arabuko-Sokoke forest are both ideal for those that want to stretch their legs and absorb the extraordinary history and wilderness this little settlement offers.

Special things to do and see here:

A wide range of activities are available to guests. Some are listed below and are all at additional cost to the B&B rate.

Deep sea fishing:
Deep sea fishing off the Malindi coast is considered one of the best fishing spots in the world. Sailfish, Marlin (Blue, Black and Striped) and Broadbill are at varying times of the year in abundance. Wahoo, Kingfish, Barracuda, Dorado, Giant Trevally and Yellow Fin Tuna are also caught on a daily basis.

Dhow Trips:
Spend the evening on an authentic Arabic trading, sailing boat and explore Mida Creek. You may even be lucky enough to see some dolphins.

Glass Bottomed Boat Trips:
Visit Malindi Marine Park in a glass bottomed boat and witness the un-spoilt sea life.

Snorkeling:
Snorkeling is the best way of enjoying the diversity of both fish and coral within Malindi Marine Park.

Tuktuk Trips:
This is the our specialty. We offer all of our guests one scenic trip in our very own Tuktuk, free of charge around Malindi town. On this trip, you will see the Old Town, the Vasco Da Gamma Pillar, the Portuguese Chapel and the Pillar Tombs; you will also be given the opportunity to visit Malindi market and shops that sell local, handmade produce.

Golf:
Malindi Golf Club - Malindi has a challenging nine hole golf course.

Kite Surfing:
This area offers perfect conditions for kitesurfers. Kitesurf Kenya is the premier kitesurf spot in East Africa.

Malindi Marine Park:
The Marine Park is located a short 5 minute taxi ride away from the Club and offers some of the best preserved coral on our coast today.

Deep Sea Diving:
This stretch of coast offers some of the very best on the east African coast. Just 20 minutes away is one of most established operators who can access the best dive sites with the best personnel. A range of courses are on offer from beginners to those more experienced. Please be aware that PADI has strict regulations on minimum ages for children.

Arabuko Sokoke Forest:
Take a walk in the last remnant of a huge coastal forest that once stretched from Somalia to Mozambique. This endangered forest hosts over 230 species of birds, 240 butterflies and 40 mammals, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Elephant have also been spotted in the forest recently. With luck you may catch a glimpse of the Golden-Rumped Elephant-Shrew or the rare and endangered Sokoke Scops Owl, one of the smallest in the world.

Crocodile and Snake Farm:
The farm is home to over 1000 Nile crocodiles. The farm holds the largest collection of indigenous snakes and reptiles in Kenya.

Massage:
The beach club has a small beauty centre on the premises where you can go and have a massage to help you relax.

Rooms, food and facilities

We offer three categories of room; Individual Cottage (sleeps 2 -4 in one room), Directors Cottage (sleeps 4 in two rooms) and Villa (sleeps 4 in two rooms). All rooms are ensuite and have air conditioning.

Each individual cottage is nestled in our beautiful tropical gardens set amongst the palm trees. The thatched (makuti) roof is a typical Kenyan coastal feature and the verandah gives you a chance to relax in peace and quiet and is perfect for an evening sundowner. They are all air-conditioned, en-suite with a large mosquito net surrounding the bed and have safety deposit boxes. No two cottages are alike and all are equally charming.

Our villas are named after islands in the Lamu archipelago on Kenya's north coast - Pate, Kiwayu and Shela are the three exclusive villas. Situated in an attractive walled tropical garden, they are only 2 minutes from the beach. Each villa has two large air-conditioned, en-suite bedrooms with large mosquito nets.

They are also equipped with ceiling fans for those who prefer not to use air-conditioning. They have a light and airy, spacious sitting room and a small kitchenette. Each one overlooks the private pool and each villa has a seating/sunbathing area immediately in front of it.

The two luxury superior cottages, Manda and Lamu, also take their name from islands in the Lamu archipelago on the north coast of Kenya. Each cottage has two spacious rooms, air-conditioned and en-suite. Every room is furnished with spacious mosquito nets. Each luxury cottage has a lounge, bar, fridge and verandah overlooking the private swimming pool. Set in their own tropical garden only seconds away from the beach, these luxury cottages are perfect for increased privacy and seclusion.

There is a large pool and a childs pool in the communal areas. The two Directors cottages share one private pool and the three Villas share a pool.

Family friendly:
The hotel prides itself on its welcome to children. There is children’s food available, a Childs swimming pool and a private beach for them to play safely on. The hotel operates a nanny and a baby sitting service and has a good range of activities and ideas suitable for children including a number of board games available to borrow.

Disabled access:
The hotel has good disabled access with ramps to all communal areas. All rooms and facilities are on the ground floor and the paths are in the main very even. There are hand rails in the rooms and assistance can be arranged for movement around the hotel.

How to find us

To reach us fly to Nairobi or Mombasa and then transfer for a forty five minute flight to Malindi. From here there is a short 10 minutes car journey to the Indian Ocean and the beach club.

How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

All the buildings are locally designed and natural local materials so we blend into the landscape and encourage local industry. Local labour is used in the construction and maintenance of these buildings.

The hotel maintains the beach as much as possible and takes every opportunity to educate guests of the areas in which they can contribute. The hotel limits the popular use of generators where possible to limit fuel consumption and noise. The hotel has fitted key fobs to all rooms to ensure that electricity is not used when guests are not in the rooms.

In relation to recycling we have a big challenge for there is no recycling plant anywhere on the Kenyan coast. The options that then present its self is for us to transport our bottles back the 500 kms to Nairobi which is both costly and not helping our carbon footprint. We are currently negotiating with our suppliers in Nairobi to include collection as part of the service, when delivering, but it is not something they are ready to commit to. To address this we have turned to a variety of techniques to reduce our consumption of plastic such as water filtration. For the waste we do generate, we have in the meantime developed a novel system whereby through our staff the bottles are made available to the rural communities to use for their own purposes and along with our internal re use system currently we are able to get almost 100% re-use of our plastic and glass waste this way.

Fresh water is a big issue in this area and we are constantly seeking to limit the amount we consume. Because it is limited we are forced to take some from the mains line but have also harnessed rain water and use our own well to service the needs outside of human consumption and washing. This includes water for the pools, gardens and cleaning which have traditionally consumed more than was available. Using this method, along with adapting our plants to indigenous hardwearing varieties, now more than 50% of what we consume is coming from identified sustainable sources. There is not yet evidence that we can justify another water tank but as soon as there is we will pursue that option.

Community

The accommodation takes its local community very seriously. It ensures that working conditions of its employees are amongst the best in the region. It also ensures that their individual family needs are catered for where possible. The accommodation seeks to employee from a wide range of backgrounds and has identified the need to increase female employees by around 10% in 2010/2011.

All services are local except when focused technical help is required in which case it is brought from the capital Nairobi.  Training is a priority with members of the team travelling locally, regionally and internationally as part of that. As much produce as possible is purchased locally and all fish from the fish market.

We encourage guests to engage with these wonderful people by offering a free Tuk Tuk ride into town and back. This also encourages guests to use facilities and purchase goods outside of the hotel. We also contribute to local and regional fundraising for key causes in the poverty and medical arenas. This takes the form of either cash donations or gifts in kind.
