Kenya safari and sailing holiday

The Mara and Lamu eco-tour is designed to offer a diverse conservation and community holiday experience. Start your holiday with two nights at the gold rated unique accommodation that is Basecamp Mara eco-lodge set along an oxbow on the bed of the Mara Talek River. Spend two nights in Mara Naboisho Conservancy where you will enjoy wildlife adventure in this conservancy known for high wildlife density, low visitor presence and exciting activities such as bush dinners and night game drives.

On day 5 transfer to Lamu (via Nairobi) where you will begin your coastal tour combining on-shore overnight accommodation with daily sailing safaris trips aboard a traditional Swahili dhow. Sail off into the Lamu Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for snorkelling, swimming and fishing before returning to your lodge in the evening. On day 7, spend a day tour of Lamu Island where you will spend the last night of this tailor-made tour.

4 nights wildlife safari in Mara Naboisho Conservancy, a private conservancy set up in 2010 and where the wildlife density by far exceeds tourist density. Stay either in luxury tented camp or an eco-lodge where the local Maasai will engage you on walking tours while relating stories of their rich cultural heritage. Relax in our spacious camps where our staff ensure that your stay with us is hospitable as you enjoy exquisitely tasteful and specially prepared meals by our camp chef.

4 nights in Lamu where the historical and mystical archaeology presents a memorable coastal tour. How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

All plastic is collected and transported for off-site recycling. Bio-degradable waste is converted to compost for our vegetable garden at Basecamp Mara.

We are 1 of only 3 gold eco rated camps in the whole of Kenya as such we conform to a very high eco standard We run on solar power with a backup generator for those times of no sunlight,& a booster system for water heating fuelled by eco briquettes made from waste, we use energy saving bulbs, recycle our waste, organic on site in a series of composting pits, plastic & tins are sent back to Nairobi for recycling, we have eco composting toilets whereby the liquid waste & all waste water is collected then used in our tree plantation

Our travellers are in the vehicles under the guidance of our driver guides who keep them a safe distance from the wildlife, when walking they are thoroughly briefed on all aspects of the activity, behaviour to adopt & safety

We have Maasai staff in all our departments & of the total number of staff 90% of them are sourced from the Maasai community.

We grow some of our own vegetables & herbs,& source some at the local market but items like meat come from Nairobi due to the health standards required. Guests are able to choose to sponsor students & the Basecamp Foundation supports the guiding school through bursaries.

Leave a positive footprint and reduce your carbon footprint by planting a tree in our tree plantation at Basecamp Mara. Support one of Basecamp Foundation’s wildlife conservation projects.

Community

Over 90% of camp staff are from the local Maasai community therefore your holiday empowers and enriches the community within which we operate our camps.

Fair-trade: the Basecamp Maasai Brand (BMB) promotes women groups from the local community in developing and retailing exquisite beaded and leather merchandise. Purchase a BMB product from our gift shops and receive a personalised message on the woman who designed the merchandise.

Empowerment and awareness through scholarships in local schools and the Koiyaki Guiding School (the only guiding school in Mara).

The local community receive income from tourism activities in the Mara Talek and Mara Naboisho Conservancies.
