Kenya mountain biking holiday
On this journey, you will experience four days of adventure cycling covering approximately 93 miles / 150 km in total. Through your journey, you will get the experience, learn and see the way of the Masai people in a totally unique way as these original inhabitants of the area will act as your guides throughout, sharing with you their knowledge and stories of the areas you pass.
The journey comes will full vehicle support for your comfort and safety that will follow you in the distance. You will experience an array of accommodation styles, adding to the adventure – from a simple permanent camp to mobile bush camps and finally a luxury tented camp to relax your body. Your support team will be busy behind the scene at all time, setting up your bush camps allowing you to put your feet up and take in the surreal and beautiful surroundings.
The only requirements for this journey would be a little spirit of adventure and anyone in an average physical cycling condition should have no problem. You should be familiar with riding a mountain bike as it is mostly trail riding, but on relatively flat ground.
This trip can be easily combined with our other safari destinations or beach extension in Kenya or Tanzania giving you a perfect balance of an African adventure fused with a totally soothing relaxation period.
Day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | Depart from Nairobi and travel towards Masai Mara plains, to a local Masai village, a base for our biking trips. A totally unique experience of accompanying Masai guides as they walk through the Loita hills, sharing their knowledge of the local plants and animals with you. You can herd cattle with the men, bead jewellery with the women, visit the children in their little local schools and later fill your evenings with their stories by the fire. After your busy day, relax in the waters of natural hot springs – all under the equatorial stars. Overnight at Maji Moto Eco Camp (L,D). |
| Day 2: | Easy cycling trip. Spend the day knowing the Masai culture better. This will be also your first cycling experience on this journey. An easy cycling, covering around 12 miles / 20 km at the beautiful village surroundings. Under the lead of a local Masai guide you will experience this amazing culture and nature through their eyes. You will visit little villages, schools and whatever interesting comes on the way. Overnight at Maji Moto Eco Camp (FB). |
| Day 3: | Cycle through savannas. After breakfast, the cycling adventure begins. The road will lead you through wide open savannas. The wildlife population here is occasional but you will definitely be rewarded by presence of gazelles, zebras and wildebeest on your way. You will be passing Masai settlements, being amazed about their lives and their relationship with nature and wildlife. You will cover approximately 25 miles / 40 km mostly on flat ground. Little part of the road is tarmac (paved), but the rest is off road (walking or cattle pats) on rough surface. Your bush camp will be set in the forest, next to a natural spring. The position of the camp is perfect and in complete privacy with a good chance to watch wild game like buffaloes, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and elephants passing by. Picnic lunch on route; dinner and overnight at the “Buffalo” camp (FB). |
| Day 4: | Loita hills. Depart deep in to Loita hills. The paths will lead you through savannas, bushes and acacia forests. You will cross rivers and see lots of wild game just from the seat of your bike. The amazing scenery here is full of wildlife like antelopes, giraffes, elephants, buffaloes and even the big cats. You will cover approximately 25 miles / 40 km mostly on flat ground. Cycling is off road on rough surface. Your second bush camp will be set under the shed of significant yellow bark acacia trees. Picnic lunch on route; dinner and overnight at the “Lion” camp (FB). |
| Day 5: | Masai Mara. Start cycling towards Kenyan’s most well-known reserve Masai Mara. This is a ride of 31 miles / 50 km. The paths will lead you through savannas, bushes and Masai villages. Arrive to your final destination in Masai Mara at lunch time. Staying at luxury eco camp will be a pleasant reward and a perfect starting point for your game drives. Here you will follow African big cats and other wildlife with a special safari vehicle. First afternoon game drive will take place this day. Overnight at Mara Tented Camp (FB). |

How this holiday makes a difference
Environment:
We aim to reveal the ‘real’ Africa to our customers. Our journey tries to stay off the beaten track as we fully believe in preserving the natural African beauty by aiming to promote local cultures and protecting the environment.
The main parks are sometimes over crowded and this human impact is damaging these sensitive areas. Therefore we believe in designing itineraries that, where possible, support private conservancies, sanctuaries or community projects as this biking trip is all about. Biking is all the way through Masai people community land. Educating the local community and direct income from tourism to those communities, leads to a better understanding of the importance of preserving their environment and culture.
Our business is small and thus unlike big agents we deal with our clients on a personal basis tailoring their journey to their needs as much as we can. Africa is our passion and we want to pass on all our knowledge and experiences gained over the years to our clients.
Mara Tented Camp: This peaceful, community run tented camp, is located just outside the Masai Mara National Reserve, on a community ranch that borders the Reserve. Nestled into the Acacia tree grove, on the edge of a small, seasonal river, this lovely camp offers fine food, excellent service and all the comforts of home, but under canvas. You can relax on your private veranda, enjoying nature and letting the world go by. The camp has twelve well furnished tents, dining room and a lounge. All tents have en-suite bathrooms and hot water showers. The camp is run on solar power. Apart from game drives they can arrange walking safaris from the camp and night game drives.
Community:
All our guides and their support team on this trip are local tribal Masai people with great knowledge about the area, its flora and fauna. We are committed to take our customers closer to nature and culture without harming any of them and to provide deep and authentic experience to all our travellers.
Maji Moto Eco Camp: The camp is a joint venture between us and a local Masai community. Our key aims are to help the local community through the jobs we are able to provide yet at the same time to encourage young tribesman to preserve and nurture their culture. The camp has been designed to be part of the environment and blend in naturally. It features Masai style dining areas, showers and toilets.
Only local materials were used (sticks, grass, cow dung, stones). Accommodation is tented, and tents are put down and stored after every departure. No trees were destroyed during the building. The camp is truly a place to escape from the fullness of everyday life, with no generator it is simple and traditional, with candles, lanterns and camp fires in the evening. Small solar panels are in place to provide electricity for charging cameras and mobile phones batteries. The camp was built, exclusively by local Masai people. This provided jobs for nearly 50 families at the time of a major Kenyan drought. There are no game drives from the camp, to reduce the impact of traveling with vehicles through out the African journey. Exploring the nature on foot with Masai guides, villages and school visits are daily activities here. The camp is also a base for our cycling trips.
