Kenya holidays, safari and beach holiday

The emphasis of the safari section of this trip is on giving you the very best wildlife and wilderness experience possible. We take you to Amboseli and the Masai Mara – so you can enjoy a range of different habitats and wildlife. Amboseli is where you'll get that view of Mount Kilimanjaro above the clouds. It's also one of the very best parks in Africa for seeing elephants. You will also get a chance to walk with Maasai trackers and take night drives.

. The Masai Mara really is one the best places in Africa for seeing lions and leopards. However there are of course many other species. It is especially good from July-October (migration).

All the camps are in private conservancies, allowing exploration on foot and night game drives as well as game drives. You will be well looked after by the camp staff and your driver-guide is a wildlife and nature expert. Tents are 2-person Sundome tents (which you help put up and down) with comfortable sleeping mattresses. From safari to coast.

Pinewood beach is a fifty eight room resort just south of Diani beach. Stylish yet rustic, this is a wonderful setting on one of Kenya's best beaches.

Featured activities:
- Wildlife viewing
- Game drives
- Game walks
- Swimming
- Relaxing on the beach
Best time to go
This trip is run all year except for November and April-end of June. If you want to see the migration you need to book a departure between July and October.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Nairobi. We pick you up at the airport and drive you to your tented camp.
Day 2: Selenkay Conservation Area. You will be collected in Nairobi this morning and driven to Selenkay Conservation Area (approx 4 hours). On arrival and after setting up camp you will enjoy a late lunch. Your first game drive of the safari is an evening drive into the conservancy. A really good range of wildife is seen here. (FB)
Day 3: Amboseli National Park. After an early breakfast you will be driven through the bush into the famous Amboseli National Park, home to large herds of elephants, wildebeest, zebra and impala and some 400 species of birds, all against the stunning backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli has a year round water supply fed by the melting snows of Kilimanjaro, ensuring a high population of game throughout the year. Lunch is taken back at the camp and this afternoon you can join an escorted walk to a local Maasai village. After dinner there is a night drive in the Conservancy to seek out the nocturnal animals. (B, L, D)
Day 4: Amboseli National Park.Early breakfast and then drive through the bush into Amboseli National Park for a full day there with good views of Kilimanjaro and close-up observation of elephants, as well as many other species. Day 5: To the Masai Mara. After breakfast drive out of the Conservancy and back to Nairobi to transfer to Wilson Airport to catch the afternoon light aircraft flight to the Mara, arriving at 4pm. Upon arrival at the airstrip in the Mara you will be transferred to the mobile camp in Ol Kinyei Conservancy and shown to your tent, before heading out on an evening game drive in the conservancy to see some of the wildlife for which the Mara is famous. Return to camp for dinner and overnight. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Full day on the Maasai Mara.Wake up at dawn and enjoy an early game drive in the conservancy on the look out for the big cats, returning to camp for a late breakfast followed by an escorted nature walk and then lunch. In the afternoon enjoy another gamedrive in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy with a night drive as you head back to camp driving in the dark with a spotlight for the chance to see the nocturnal animals. Pinewood Village is ideally situated for sea excursions, and there's a watersports centre here too. If that's too energetic just soak up the relaxing ambience. Maybe have a massage or one of the other many pampering treats on offer. (BD)
Day 12: Home time. You will have the use of your room and hotel facilites until it's time to take you to the airport for your onward journey or to connect to the overnight flight back to Home. (B)

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

Environment:
On safari: As well as the community gaining from tourism to these community-owned areas, the wildlife is helped too. These large areas of land adjacent to the parks and reserves form a wider area for the wildlife to roam without persecution, and indeed, without to so many tourists!

Pinewood beach: In terms of the environment, Pinewood help protect Angolan Colobus monkeys in the adjacent forest, try not to sell anything in plastic bottles, harvest rainwater for hotel use, discourage the local sale of seashells, created a Whale Shark Trust to protect these animals and in collaboration with Sea World California support a tagging exercise, only wash towels when requested, and try to preserve the indigenous flora and fauna.

Carbon Offsetting: The tour operator is a multi-award winning responsible travel company, and for each person travelling with them they plant 10 indigenous trees in a degraded area of northern Tanzania.

Community:
On safari: Our driver-guides and camp staff are all Kenyans, and our partners on the ground are as committed as we are to responsible tourism. We camp in two Maasai-community-owned conservation areas. These communities receive an income for the use of the land and also an entry fee per visitor, so they are now earning from their own natural resources – the land. In addition, roads in Selenkay were built with local labour, so direct employment is forthcoming from the tourism which comes here. Another form of employment is that local game scouts patrol the areas to protect the wildlife.

:

Pinewood beach: The hotel strongly believes in and practices support for the local community and local suppliers. For example, locals are employed out of preference, they buy vegetables and fish locally, they have an agreed policy/conduct code for any beach vendors, they arrange for guests to visit the local village, school and clinic. They also back the Kwale Eye clinic. They are currently setting up a trust fund to help local schools too, and are actively working against child labour and sex tourism.
